What is Incoterms or Terms of Shipment?

Incoterms or trade terms are used to define the obligations of seller and buyer in the movement of goods from one person to another. The term is used to explain which party is responsible for the costs and risks at each stage of the goods movement.

Volume and its calculation

The amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container.

Calculation:

Length x Width x Height

Volumetric Weight and its calculation

The cost of a shipment can be affected by the amount of space that it occupies on an aircraft, rather than the actual weight. This is the volumetric (or dimensional) weight. Charges will be based on the whichever greater(Volumetric or Cargo Weight)

Calculations:

LCL: 1m3 = 300kg(Inland, US and UK),  1m3 = 1000kg (General)

AIR: Length x Width x Height per package / 6000 / Pivot Weight

COURIER: Length x Width x Height per package / 5000

What is Bill of Lading for Sea Shipment?

A bill of lading (sometimes abbreviated as B/L or BoL) is a document issued by a Carrier/Shipping line which details a shipment of merchandise and gives title of that shipment to a specified party.

What is Airway Bill for Air?

The air waybill is the most important document issued by a Carrier/Airline either directly or through its authorised agent. It is a non-negotiable transport document. It covers transport of cargo from airport to airport. By accepting a shipment an IATA cargo agent is acting on behalf of the carrier whose air waybill is issued.

What is Proforma Invoice?

A proforma invoice is not a true invoice – it is simply a document that declares the seller’s commitment to provide the goods or services specified to the buyer at certain prices. Proforma invoices are not recorded as an accounts receivable by the seller nor are they recorded as an accounts payable by the buyer.

What is Certificate Of Origin?

A Certificate of Origin (CO) is an important international trade document attesting that goods in a particular export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured or processed in a particular country. COs also constitute a declaration by the exporter.

What is Unique Entity Number?

From 1 January 2009, all entities that are registered in Singapore, such as businesses, local companies, limited liability partnerships (LLPs), societies, representative offices, healthcare institutions and trade unions, will have a Unique Entity Number (UEN) as its identification number.

What is HS Code?

The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, also known as the Harmonized System (HS) of tariff nomenclature is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products.  In some countries, the HS Code derive the duty, tax values

What is Free On Truck (FOT)?

Above rates is based on Free On Truck(FOT) meaning rates quoted exclude loading/unloading, packing/unpacking, handyman service and disposal of packaging material

All cargo collected and delivered will be tallied/counted based on the outer packaging only.  No checking of inner package is allowed

What is Free On Board (FOB)?

“Free On Board” means that the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment or procures the goods already so delivered. The risk of loss of or damage to the goods passes when the goods are on board the vessel, and the buyer bears all costs from that moment onwards.

What is Ex Works (EXW)?

“Ex Works” means that the seller delivers when it places the goods at the disposal of the buyer at the seller’s premises or at another named place (i.e.,works, factory, warehouse, etc.). The seller does not need to load the goods on any collecting vehicle, nor does it need to clear the goods for export, where such clearance is applicable.

What is Delivered At Place (DAP)?

“Delivered at Place” means that the seller delivers when the goods are placed at the disposal of the buyer on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the named place of destination. The seller bears all risks involved in bringing the goods to the named place.

What is Delivered Duty Paid (DDP)?

“Delivered Duty Paid” means that the seller delivers the goods when the goods are placed at the disposal of the buyer, cleared for import on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the named place of destination. The seller bears all the costs and risks involved in bringing the goods to the place of destination and has an obligation to clear the goods not only for export but also for import, to pay any duty for both export and import and to carry out all customs formalities.

What is Cost and Freight (CNF)?

“Cost and Freight” means that the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel or procures the goods already so delivered. The risk of loss of or damage to the goods passes when the goods are on board the vessel. the seller must contract for and pay the costs and freight necessary to bring the goods to the named port of destination.

What do I do if my shipment failed to arrive, or was damaged?

Should this scenario happen to you, it is absolutely important that you contact our consultants with an accurate and detailed description of your goods and its packaging as soon as possible. We will do everything we can to assist you.However, cargo insurance must be taken up in the event of damaged goods. Hence, the importance of having insurance for your goods. Please do note that damage to goods in transit can happen frequently as a result of inadequate packaging.

What is the maximum size of package I can send?

Please do not exceed 120 cm in dimensions as the package needs to be able to fit into the door openings of our transport vehicles. If your package is larger than 120 cm in dimensions, please feel free to contact our advisors. We are more than delighted to advise and arrange other modes of transportation for larger items.

I am new to exporting but would like to start exporting to several countries. How should I go about doing this?

Is my shipment insured?

Yes. Megaton Shipping is pleased to provide cargo insurance for our valued clients at an additional cost. 

Are transit times guaranteed?

Freight transit times are not guaranteed but are an estimate though they are usually reliable. Freight shipping transit times will begin the day after your freight has been collected. 

What do I do if my shipment failed to arrive, or was damaged?

How should I package my goods?

Your goods should be properly and securely packaged to prevent any damages during transit. All freight should be packaged, stacked, crated and secured onto pallets with banding. It must be shrink-wrapped or wrapped with breakaway adhesive. Be sure to label every piece of freight so as to avoid losing your packages. Failure to adhere to proper and secured packing will nullify any damage or loss claims.

Always avoid using damaged packaging containers or boxes and only use high quality wrapping and/or cushioning materials. Fragile items must be wrapped well with cushion on all sides. Common types of cushioning can include bubble wrap and Styrofoam chips. Fragile flat items must have protective dividers in between them to provide absorption to shocks. Common types of dividers can include chipboard or foam sheets and corrugated cardboard sheets.

If I have multiple packages, will it be repacked into one?

Repacking will only be done upon request. We will not repack any goods unless specified.

How is the repackaging done?

Megaton Shipping repacks your package by minimizing the height of the package so as to reduce the volumetric weight. We will repack it into smaller padded envelopes to reduce its volume and thereby lowering the shipping charges. However, we will only repack upon request. Repacking will not be done unless specified.

How should I pack my boxes?

Boxes ranging from different sizes, shapes, materials and accessories can be utilized to secure your goods. Heavy-duty double-layered cardboard can be used as a cheaper and suitable alternative to wood boxes. However, wood boxes are more appropriate for shipping heavier goods and are more suitable for machine handling. Please ensure that your boxes are not overloaded as it may burst. Boxes must also not be under-filled as it may cause the box to collapse during shipment.
